lu don't moo no cow-words, you only heard lions

lupe finally released the anticipated "shining down" ft. matthew santos, to itunes yesterday. i first heard a preview of this song when i saw him live at BC and at UNH and i couldn't wait to hear it. lupe doesnt dissapoint with this track. the lyrics can be interpreted in many ways but i think basically he is trying to say that he is back and is trying to change rap music. he is sick of all the autotune crap and he thinks we should be listening to insightful music that teaches instead of going around in circles saying the same shit in every song.

im gonna try my best to interpret this line by line...

chorus:
Look up in the sky
Now Look up in the sky
Look up in the sky
You thought I was down
You thought I was gone
Thought I wasn't around
I left you alone
But look up in the sky
Just look up in the sky
See that I'm everywhere, everywhere
Shining Down on you

the chorus is basically just saying that if you thought he was gone, hes not. hes just looking down on everything thats going on in the world and trying to improve things.

verse 1:
Well well,
Is that our little author?
Coming back, humming his hymns a little altered
Your attention; put back on the flow like a department of water
Take it off the door like little Walter
Chess? Yes. Baby, I'm Jerry Lawler
Rebel with a cause; outlaw with the laywer
Judge, jurry like a loo; Rap name Lupe but my daddy named me Warrior
This is his memorial.

in this verse he is saying that he is back, preaching what needs to be preached. he says our attention is put back on his flow like the water dept's attention is on the flow of water. he makes a reference to little walter, a blues singer who i'm not that familiar with. he says yes to "chess?" because he is the king like the wrestler, jerry "the king" lawler. he is saying that he is a rebel that has a purpose and an outlaw that can do whatever he wants cause he has a lawyer. his rap name is lupe but his dad named him Wasalu which means warrior. he is writing this song for his dad.

verse 2:
No, I ain't that nigga trying to get a liquor line
When I be scripting lines; want this petition signed.
It says I'm sick of dying; sick of this prison time
I really love my people; I'm sick of pimpin' mine.
Now if we autotune that shit
We can hear the songs from that opera groomed fat bitch
Tellin us not to pursue her, just to shoo her like a blacksmith
We're trapped, and moving round in circles like it's chap stick
And that's the same encircled way of thinking that we chat with
We'll rap this, around your head like a bandanna's fabulous
Used to wrap his hat's with, Rather be in F.E.D.S. instead of National Geographics
We'll I'm not having it now.

in this verse, the first four lines are in autotune. he says he doesnt want a liquor line like puffy and jay-z have. when he is rapping he just wants to get his point across. he says he is sick of dying, sick of prison time, he loves his people, and is sick of pimpin. all these things are too important to be sung in autotune. he says that if we keep saying important things in autotune then the "fat lady will sing" and no one will pay attention to lyrics anymore. he says that we're trapped in this trend of rap music and its making us not think in the real world. he says he is going to wrap this message around your head so you get it like the fabolous used to wrap bandannas around his hat. he thinks people would rather read FEDS magazine instead of national geographics and he is not down with that.

verse 3:
So I say hello and this is for the third time
To everybody out there who ain't ever heard of mine
And if you have then you know you ain't ever heard lying
Lu don't moo no cow words, you only heard lions
Not a facade cherisher, I'd rather have the scars
I don't idolize America, I'm dancing with the stars
Uh huh, All of them? Ya, they are too.
You look up and you see us shining down on you

in this verse he says that he is back for the third time (third cd). he says that if youve never listened to me or even if you have, you know i dont lie. he doesnt speak of things that are not important (cow-words) he only speaks the of important matters (loud like lions). he says he doesnt cherish the facades, an artificial front, he would rather have something that lasts (scars). he makes an american idol and dancing with the stars reference by saying he doesnt like whats going on in america and would rather be up in the sky looking down on everyone.

  1. The Little Walter "Chess" part is a reference to the label Little Walter recorded on with Muddy Waters.

    As far as:
"Lu don't moo no cow words, you only heard lions" I think it might be: "Lu don't move no cow heards (cowards) you only heard lions. You might be right not sure but either way it's a play on cowards and courageous lions.

  2. in reference to the bars... taking off with the (dough) like little walter chess yes baby im jerry lawler. This onslaught of lyrical homicide has proven once again that lupe should not only be in everyones top three but should be considered as one of the best in his craft. the line taking off with the dough like little walter was in reference to an blues artist that was on chess records that in fact did take his cadillac doors off because it didnt have any air conditioning. the line chess yes baby im jerry lawler is simply a metaphor to explain that the owners of chess records lou and phil chess(citation needed) were allegedly stealing funds from there artist which in turn lil Walter was an artist but shortly left after he figured out what was going on hence taking off with the dough the jerry lawler acknowlegment only solidifies lupe as being the King of his career, and royalties i might add, hence the line outlaw with a lawyer.... rap name Lupe but my daddy named me warrior(wasulu)which translate into hes going to speak his mind and hes not going to get raped by these execs throwing cars and women at him instead whats rightfully his royalties and dignity.

  5. yeah, I liked it. I hadn't looked up the lyrics, but I'm glad I was directed from Fiasco's site.

You forgot to mention that like Chess records stealing mony from their artists. Lupe feels Atlantic is doing the same.

"Great American Rap Album" was supposed to be a statment to the label about how he wanted to liberate himself from them because of this very reason.
